Solution

Solid waste management:

  1. The term solid waste management mainly refers to the complete process of collecting, treating and disposing of solid wastes.
  2. Solid waste means any waste which is solid in the matter. Example: Paper, glass.

Open-air landfills or dumping:

  1. In this process, the waste that cannot be reused or recycled is separated out and spread as a thin layer in low-lying areas across a city.
  2. A layer of soil is added after each layer of garbage.
  3. However, once this process is complete, the area is declared unfit for the construction of buildings for the next 20 years.
  4. Instead, it can only be used as a playground or a park.
  5. Solid-waste dumping in the outskirts of towns and cities is called open-air landfills.
