The intermolecular force between the liquids is much less compared to that of solids.
The distance between liquid particles is more than the distance between solid particles.
As a result the particles of liquids are not compact and can flow.
So liquids do not have a definite shape but solids do.
Thus, solids can not change their shape according to the container in which they are kept, but liquids can.
