Solids do not change their shape according to the container in which they are kept, but liquids do. Explain.

Solution

  • The intermolecular force between the liquids is much less compared to that of solids.
  • The distance between liquid particles is more than the distance between solid particles.
  • As a result the particles of liquids are not compact and can flow.
  • So liquids do not have a definite shape but solids do.
  • Thus, solids can not change their shape according to the container in which they are kept, but liquids can.
