1. No. of envelopes $= \frac{a r e a o f s h e e t o f p a p e r}{a r e a o f p a p e r r e q u i r e d f o r o n e e n v e l o p e}$

$= \frac{324 \times 172}{18 \times 12}$

$= \frac{55728}{216}$

$= 258$ envelopes

2. Area of the room which is not carpeted $=$ Area of the room $-$ Area of the square carpet
$= 12.5 \times 8 - 8 \times 8 = 100 - 64 = 36 c m^{2}$
