Question

Solve for x and y:

x+6y=6,3x8y=5 (y0).

Open in App
Solution

x + 6/y = 6 ---- 1

3x - 8/y = 5 ---- 2

by elimination method :-

multiplying equation 1 by 4 --- 4x + 24/y = 24 --- 3

multiplying equation 2 by 3 --- 9x - 24/y = 15 --- 4

equation 3 + equation 4

4x + 24/y + 9x - 24/y = 24 + 15

13x = 39

implements x = 3

therefore--- substituting value of x in equation 1

3 + 6/y = 6

i.e. (3y + 6)/y = 6

3y + 6 = 6y

6 = 6y-3y .... 6 = 3y

implements y = 2

therefore x = 3 and y=2
