Question

Solve the following:
(a) Express x in terms of y for the equation 7x + 5y = 35 and find the X-intercept.
(b) Find the intercepts of the line whose equation is x + y = 4 [3 MARKS]

Solution

Subpart : 1.5 Marks each

(a) 7x+5y=35

7x=355y

x=557y .......(i)

At the X intercept, y = 0

Putting this in the equation(i), we get x = 5

X intercept = 5

(b) x+y=4 ......(1)

At the Y axis, x = 0

Putting x = 0 in the equation(1), we get y = 4

Hence, Y intercept = 4

At the X axis, y = 0

Putting y = 0 in the equation, we get x = 4

Hence, X intercept = 4.
