Solve the following equation.
$10 y + 10 = 100$
$2 (x + 4) = 12$ . Find $x + y$ .

Solution

$10 y + 10 = 100$

$\Rightarrow 10 y = 100 - 10 = 90$

$\Rightarrow y = \frac{90}{10} = 9$

$2 (x + 4) = 12$

$\Rightarrow 2 x + 8 = 12$

$\Rightarrow 2 x = 4 \Rightarrow x = \frac{4}{2} = 2$

$∴ x + y = 9 + 2 = 11$ .
