Given equation: $\frac{1}{2}\mathrm{x}-1=1$

The side on the left of this equal sign $(=)$ is called the left hand side (or L.H.S.) and the one on the right is called the right hand side (or R.H.S.)

so, here L.H.S $=$$\frac{1}{2}\mathrm{x}-1$ and R.H.S $=1$

Now try $\mathrm{x}=1,2,3,4...$

When, $\mathrm{x}=1$ L.H.S $=\frac{1}{2}\times 1-1=\frac{-1}{2}\ne$R.H.S

When, $\mathrm{x}=2$ L.H.S $=\frac{1}{2}\times 2-1=0\ne$R.H.S

When, $\mathrm{x}=3$ L.H.S $=\frac{1}{2}\times 3-1=\frac{1}{2}\ne$R.H.S

When, $\mathrm{x}=4$ L.H.S $=\frac{1}{2}\times 4-1=1=$R.H.S

Hence, $\mathrm{x}=4$ is the solution.
