Question

Solve this:
Q.(a). Arrange the following in increasing order of Acidic character.

(b) What happens when KMnO4 is heated ? Give chemical equation.
(c) What are non-stoichiometric oxides ? Give one example.

Solution

Dear Student,

(a) Acidic character increases with the increase in oxidation state of the central metal atom. Oxidation state of Mn in MnO2 is +4, in Mn2O7 is +7 and in MnO is +2So, the order will be MnO < MnO2 < Mn2O7(b) Potassium permanganate on heating decomposes to give potassium mangante.2KMnO4 K2MnO4 +MnO2 +O2 (c) The oxides in which metal to oxygen ratio is not whole number are called non-stoichiometric oxides. For eg. Fe0.94O
