Follicle stimulating hormone is one of the gonadotrophic hormones which is released by the pituitary gland into the bloodstream. Follicle stimulating hormone is one of the hormones essential to pubertal development and the function of women's ovaries. In women, this hormone stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in the ovary before the release of an egg from one follicle at ovulation.
LH (luteinizing hormone) increases rapidly just before ovulation occurs which is called as LH surge. Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary, pushed down the fallopian tube and is available to be fertilized. The corpus luteum develops from an ovarian follicle during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, following the release of a secondary oocyte from the follicle during ovulation.
