The water from the soil is absorbed by root hairs. It then moves to the deeper parts of the root through a mass of cells called the cortex, by cell to cell osmosis. This water then reaches the xylem, which then continues upward into the stem and the leaves.
This upward movement of water and minerals from the roots to the aerial parts of a plant is called ascent of sap.
