Dear Student,
The Panchayati Raj institutions are institutions to promote local governance in rural areas. These institutions do not apply to urban areas.
There are three levels of Panchayati Raj institutions. They are
1. Gram Panchayats: A gram panchayat is a village level administrative body with an elected sarpanch as the head. The members of a gram panchayat are elected for a term of five years.
2. Block-level panchayat: It is the next higher level of the Panchayati Raj system and works as the link between the gram panchayat and the district administration. Members of the block level panchayat are the sarpanch(s) of all village panchayats in that block, the local MLAs and MPs and some other administrative officers.
3. District level Panchayats or the ZilaParishads form the highest level of Panchayati Raj institutions. It is headed by a chief administrative officer who is usually an IAS officer.
