Write a short note on the structure of the Panchayati Raj.

The Panchayati Raj System is a three-tier system in our country. It works at following levels:

• Gram Panchayat: It works at the village level. It is responsible for catering to the social, economic and political needs of the people in the villages.
• Block Samiti: It is an intermediate link between the Gram Panchayat and the Zila Parishad. It is named differently in different states.
• Zila Parishad: It is the apex body of the whole Panchayati Raj System. It works at the district level and towards the development of district.

It is a very important institution that existed even in the ancient times. The government felt the need to strengthen it and, therefore, it was formally included in the Indian Constitution.
