Origin and evolution of new species is called speciation. In nature, new species are continuously formed from pre-existing populations by gradual modifications in their genetic and morphological characteristics.
When the evolved population is isolated to avoid free gene flow, a new species with evolved characteristics arises.
Effect of time
Speciation is a function of time. The environmental conditions in the tropics have remained constant since a very long time whereas the temperate region has often experienced extreme disastrous events such as glaciations.
This has allowed the organisms living in the tropics to evolve undisturbed over a long period of time which has led to greater species diversification.
