The scrotum is a thin external sac of skin that is divided into two compartments and each compartment contains one of the two testes. Testes produce and store the sperms. It is continuous with the skin of the lower abdomen and is located directly behind the penis and in front of the anus. The scrotum regulates the temperature of the testes and maintains it at 35 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures affect spermatogenesis. Temperature control is accomplished by the smooth muscles of the scrotum moves the testicles either closer to or further away from the abdomen dependent upon the ambient temperature. Another function is it protects the testes from jolts and compressions associated with an active lifestyle. The external scrotum is not affected by abdominal pressure which prevents the emptying of the testes before the sperm were matured for fertilization.
