Solution

Heating with conc. HCl:

When Manganese dioxide (MnO2)is heated with conc. HCl, Chlorine gas is evolved during the reaction.

Balanced chemical equation:-

MnO2sManganesedioxide+4HClaqHydrochloricacidMnCl2aqManganesechloride+2H2Olwater+Cl2gChlorinegas

  • When Copper (II) oxide (CuO) is heated with conc. HCl, chlorine gas is not evolved during the reaction.

Balanced chemical equation:

CuOsCopper(II)oxide+2HClaqHydrochloricacidCuCl2aqCopper(II)chloride+H2Olwater

In this way, we can distinguish between Manganese dioxide and Copper (II) oxide.
