Question

State the electrode reaction at the anode during the electrolysis of:

Aqueous copper sulphate using platinum electrodes.

Open in App
Solution

  • Electrolysis is a process in which electricity is passed through a substance to effect a chemical change.

Electrolysis of aqueous copper sulfate using platinum electrodes :
CuSO4(aq)ā‡ŒCu2++SO42-(aq)

Reaction at the anode :
4OH-(aq)-4e-ā†’4OH(aq)

4OH(aq)ā†’O2(g)+2H2O(l)

Therefore, oxygen gas and water will be formed at the anode.
