Guard cell:

  1. Guard cells are kidney-shaped structures that surround the stomatal openings.
  2. They are responsible for the opening and closing of stomata.
  3. When guard cells swell up, then the stomatal pore opens up and when they are flaccid then, the stomatal pore closes.
  4. Guard cells also contain chlorophyll and help in photosynthesis.

Location:

  1. A pair of guard cells surround the stomatal opening.
  2. They are present in the upper and the lower epidermis of the leaves.
