Question

State the factors on which pressure depends.

Open in App
Solution

Definition of pressure:

  1. Pressure is defined as a force acting on a unit area.
  2. Pressure is given by Pressure(P)=Force(Thrust)Area
  3. The SI unit is given by newton/meter2(N/m2)orpascal(Pa)

Factors on which pressure depends:

  1. The Magnitude of the force acting on a surface:

1.1 More is the force acting on a given surface more is the pressure exerted.

1.2 Thus we can say force is directly proportional to pressure.

2. The area of the surface on which force acts:

2.1 The effectiveness of the force applied depends upon the area on which it is acting

2.2 If the area on which the force is applied is smaller then the effect of force will be greater thus pressure exerted will be large.

2.3 Thus we can say that area is inversely proportional to pressure.

Hence, Pressure depends on these two important factors.
