Axon:

  1. Axon which is also called nerve fibre, portion of a nerve cell (neuron) that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body or cyton.
  2. Axon may represent over 95% of the total volume of the neuron.
  3. Myelin (is a fatty substance ) acts as insulator for axons, helping to send their signals over long distances.

Location:

  1. Axons are located at the specialized location on a cell body called the axon hillock.

Function:

  1. It directs electrical impulses or action potentials away from the cell body or soma of a neuron towards another cell such as another neuron, muscle cell, etc..
