Solution

Newland’s Law of Octaves

The Law of Octaves was proposed by the English Chemist John Newlands in 1865. Oct means 8. Newland took example of musical notations 'sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa' and stated that the notation 'sa' gets repeated after 7th notation. He implemented this in periodic table and said properties gets repeated after 7th element.

  1. Law of Octaves states that, “The elements possessing similar chemical and physical properties occur periodically after an interval of seven elements, when the elements are arranged in the ascending order of atomic masses”.
  2. For instance, Chlorine is the eighth element after Fluorine, and they share similar physical and chemical properties, both belonging to the halogen family.
