Dhananjay,
There are various ways to achieve the objectives of consumer protection. The following are the means to achieve consumer protection.
1. Business and Commerce Associations- Business organisations must be formed which will work actively towards the interests of the consumers. In India, business and commerce associations such as Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(FICCI) and Confederation of Indian Industries(CII) work in this regard. These associations lay down guidelines for their members regarding the code of conduct for consumer dealings.
2. Consumer Associations- Similar to business associations, consumers themselves must also form organisations and associations to continuously educate themselves and remain updated about their rights and responsibilities. Additionally, they must encourage other consumers to protest against any form of exploitation or cheating and assist them in taking legal actions and seeking redressal. For instance, associations such as Consumer Unity and Trust Society, Consumer Guidance Society of India, Consumer Protection Council etc. work actively towards consumer awareness and protection.
3. Self Administration by Business- Business firms must realise it is in their long-term interest to protect the interest and welfare of their customers. They must keep in mind that satisfied customers not only lead to repeated sales but also spread goodwill about the company, thereby bringing in new customers.
4. Consumer Awareness- Well aware and educated consumers can protect themselves from any form of exploitation and cheating. They are better able to safeguard their own interests.
5. Government- Government can promote consumer protection by providing a legal framework comprising various regulations and Acts that provides for consumer protection.
