Solution

Reaction of ammonia NH3 with oxygen O2:

  • Ammonia on reacting with water gives free nitrogen N2 and water H2O.
  • 4NH3(g)+3O2(g)2N2(g)+6H2O(l)+Heat

Therefore, when ammonia gas is burnt in an atmosphere of oxygen in the absence of a catalyst:

  • free nitrogen and water are formed.
  • The reaction is irreversible and strongly exothermic.
  • Mixture of nitrogen with oxygen is explosive and, therefore, dangerous.
