Both statements are true and statement 2 is the correct explanation for statement 1. Dantidurga was able to overthrow his Chalukyan overlord as they were distracted with the war with the Pallavas. Though Dantidurga overthrew the Chalukyan king, he was not a Kshatriya and therefore had to undergo a ritual called the Hiranyagarba, to become Kshatriya. Hiranyagarba means the golden womb. This was done as people were used to the Varna system where the people saw that only Kshatriyas, or Brahamanas were rulers.
