After 40 years of peace under the leadership of Maravarman Kulasekaran the province had to undergo a civil war. Maravarman Kulasekaran had two sons. He appointed Vira Pandyan as his co-regent. This provoked his other son Sundara Pandyan who killed his father Maravarman Kulasekaran. This caused a civil war. Vira Pandyan won the war and established his kingdom.
