Single Cell Protein or SCP refers to the edible protein extracted from pure microbial cultures, dead, or dried cell biomass. It can be used as an alternative protein source or supplement for both humans and animals. Hence statement i is false.
Microorganisms such algae, fungi, yeast, and bacteria can be used as SCP.
Examples include:
i) Algae: Spirulina, Chlorella
ii) Fungi: Candida, Saccharomyces
iii) Bacteria: Methylophilus methylotrophus
They multiply rapidly and can easily be grown using inexpensive substrates like agricultural wastes, wood shavings, sawdust, corn cobs, waste water from the potato processing industry, straw, molasses, manure, sewage, human and animal waste etc. Hence statement ii is correct.
