Interferons are the signalling protein molecules which are released after a cell is infected by a virus. These signaling molecules pass the information to uninfected cells so that they can be ready to fight with the invading viruses. These interferons work by inhibiting protein synthesis, inactivation of viral RNA, activation of other immune cells, etc.

Viruses have found out ways to evade the interferon action such as not allowing the infected cells to present antigen for other immune cells to act upon.

The number of interferons can increase during inflammatory reactions too. Successful reception of microbes lead to production of interferons that cause activation of macrophages. IFN-γ can potentiate pro-inflammatory signaling by priming macrophages for antimicrobial actions
