Alkanes are saturated compounds because they have only single bonds.
Alkenes and alkynes do not undergo the substitution reaction because of the presence of the double and triple bonds. So, they easily undergo addition reactions.
Whereas, alkanes undergo substitution easily because they have only single bonds and by replacing the Hydrogen ( $H$ ) atoms from the alkanes, a substitution reaction can take place easily.
So, substitution reactions are characteristic reactions of alkanes.
