Question

Suggest the possible methods of separation of liquid-gas mixtures. Explain each method with an example.

Solution

Separation of liquid-gas mixtures can be done by preferential liquefication followed by fractional distillation.

Preferential liquefaction:

  • Preferential liquefication is used for the separation of gases on basis of liquefication.
  • Liquefication is the method of converting gas into liquid by applying some pressure.
  • The gas liquefaction will take below or at its critical temperature.
  • The critical temperature is the temperature above which a gas can not liquefy whatever pressure may apply.
  • After liquefying a gas it can be separated using fractional distillation.

Fractional distillation:

  • It is the type of separation technique that is used to separate a mixture of liquid-based upon their boiling point.
  • In this method distillation and condensation are repeated various times.
  • This repeated process results in the separation of liquid.
  • The substance with a lower melting point will separate first in another beaker.
