Question

Sulfide ion in alkaline solution reacts with solid sulfux to form polysulfide ions having formules S22,S23,S24 and so on. The equilibrium constant for the formation of S22 is 12(K5) & for the formulation of S23 is 132(K2), both from S and S2. What is the equilibrium content for the formation of S23 from S22 and S?

Solution

The correct option is A 11
S+S2S22 k1=12

So, 12=[S22][S2] ............(1)

S+S2S23 k2=132

So, 132=[S23][S2] ............(1)

For S+S22S23 k3=[S23][S22]

By dividing (1) and (2),
k2k1=k3=13212=11
Hence, equilibrium constant is 11.
