Question

Sulphuric acid can be used to prepare a number of gases in the laboratory. Write balanced equations for the reactions from which the following gases are obtained, using dilute sulphuric acid as one of the reactants:
(i) Hydrogen
(ii) Carbon dioxide
(iii) Sulphur dioxide

Open in App
Solution

Given below are the balanced chemical reactions involving dilute sulphuric acid, whereby, the following gases are produced:

(i) Hydrogen gas is evolved on reaction with metals:

M + H2SO4 → MSO4 + H2

(ii) Metal carbonates evolve carbon dioxide:

MCO3 + H2SO4 → MSO4 + H2O +CO2

(iii) Metal sulphites and metal bisulphite release sulphur dioxide:

M2SO3 + H2SO4 → M2SO4 + H2O +SO2
2MHSO3 + H2SO4 → M2SO4 + 2H2O + 2SO2

(where, M is any metal)
