If the smaller number is taken to be x the larger number is 5 more than x, i.e. x + 5 the other condition says that sum of these two numbers x and x + 5 is 15

This means that x + (x + 5) = 15

Similarly, if the large number is taken as x, then the smaller number will be x - 5. So the equation will be

x + (x - 5) = 15
