Solution

The correct option is C

Third law of motion

Step 1. Explanation for correct option

  1. When a swimmer swim in water it experiences a force opposite to the direction of the movement of the swimmer.
  2. In order to overcome this force, swimmer must stroke in downward direction to float in water and move forward.
  3. The force applied by water and swimmer are equal in magnitude but the direction of the force is opposite
  4. From Newtons third law of motion we know that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
  5. The swimmer experience a force of equal magnitude but opposite direction from the water.
  6. So in this case Newtons third law is applicable

So option C is correct

Step 2. Explanation for incorrect option

For option A

  1. From Newtons first law we get, every body continues in its state of rest or motion unless and until some external force act on it.
  2. This law is not applicable for swimming.
  3. So option A is incorrect

For option B

  1. From Newtons second law of motion we get the rate of change of momentum is directtly proportional to the applied force.
  2. This law is not applicable for swimming.
  3. So option B is incorrect

For option D

  1. All the three laws of motion of Newton is considered as newton laws of motion . Since first and second law is not applicable for swimming
  2. So option D is incorrect

Hence, option C is the correct option
