Solution

Methane:

  • Methane is the simplest hydrocarbon with the chemical formula of CH4.
  • The chemical reactions involving methane can be given as:

Oxidation of methane

  • Methane undergoes partial oxidation to methanol releasing CO2 and H2O.
  • The chemical reaction is: CH4CH3OH+CO2+H2O

Substitution reaction:

  • Methane undergoes a substitution reaction. It reacts with halogen radicals to form methyl halide.
  • For example, methane reacts with hydrochloric acid to form methyl chloride. In this process, one of the bonds breaks a weak CH covalent bond and grabs the liberated proton to form the electrically neutral HCl. The other radical reformed was a covalent bond with the CH3 to form CH3Cl.

Condensation reaction:

  • Methane is added to condensation reactions through consecutive eliminative condensation reactions.
  • Where the CH3+ ion, formed in ionized methane, undergoes consecutive eliminative condensation reactions with methane to form the carbonium ions i,e C2H5+,C3H7+andC4H9+.
