Question

The apparatus shown in figure consists of four glass columns connected by horizontal sections. The heights of two central columns B and C are 49 cm each. The two outer columns A and D are open to atmosphere. The columns A and C are maintained at a temperature of 95C, while the column B and D are maintained at 5C. The heights of liquid in A and D measured from base line are 52.8 cm and 51 cm respectively. Determine the coefficient of thermal expansion of the liquid.

Solution

Applying Pascal's law from limb A to limb D
P0+ρAghAρBghB+ρCghCρDghD=P0
and ρA=ρC+ρ2(say) and ρB=ρD=ρ1(say)
ρ2g(52.8)ρ1g(49)+ρ2(49)ρ1g(51)=0
or, ρ2ρ1=51+4952.8+49=100101.8
As density decreases with rise in temperature, ρ2=ρ1[1γt)
ρ1[1γ(t2t1)]ρ1=100101.8
or, 1γ(955)=100101.8
γ=1.96×104/C.
