The area of the cross-section of press plunger of a hydraulic press is 4 m2. It is required to overcome a resistive load of 400 kgf on it. Calculate the force required on the pump plunger if the area of cross section of the pump plunger is 0.01 m2
1 kgf
Let F1 and F2 be the forces exerted and A1 and A2 be the area of cross section of the pump plunger and the press plunger respectively.
We know that, A1=0.01m2, F2=400 kgf and A2=4 m2
By Pascals law,
Pressure on pump plunger = Pressure on press plunger
⇒F1A1=F2A2
⇒F10.01=4004
⇒ F1=100×0.01 = 1 kgf
