Question

The atomic mass of thorium is 232 and its atomic number is 90. During the course of its radioactive disintegration 6α and 4β-particles are emitted. What is the atomic mass and atomic number of the final atom?

Solution

Decrease in mass due to emission of 6α-particles =6×4=24.
So, Atomic mass of the product atom =(23224)=208
Number of β-particles emitted =2× Number of α-particles (ZThoriumZFinal atom)
4=2×6(90ZFinal atom)
or ZFinal atom=82
