Question

The atomic numbers of Nitrogen, Oxygen and fluorine are 7, 8, and 9 respectively. Write the electronic configuration of each element and answer the following: (a) What is the number of valence electrons of F? (b) What is the valency of each of N, O and F?

Solution

Electronic configuration:

N - 2, 5
O - 2, 6
F- 2, 7
F has 7 electrons in the outermost shell and so the number of valence electrons is 7.

Valency:

N has 5 valence electrons and its valency is 8-5 =3
O has 6 valence electrons and its valency is 8-6 = 2
F has 7 valence electrons and its valency is 8-7 = 1
