Question

The base of a conical tent is of area 616 sq units. A vertical pole of length of 48 units is placed at its centre so that it touches the roof of the tent. How much canvas (in sq
units)is needed to make the tent if the base is also covered with canvas? [Take π=27]

Solution

Here, we need to calculate the total surface area of the cone.

We know:
Total surface area of the cone=πr(l+r)
=πrl+πr2
where πr2 is the area of the base of
the cone and l is the slant height
of the cone.

Given:
Area of base = 616 sq units

πr2=616 sq units
227×r2=616

r2=616×722=196
r=196 unit
r=14 unit

Also, height of cone = 48 units

We know:
L=h2+r2
=482+142
=2304+196
=2500=50 units

Total surface area of a cone=πrl+πr2

So, total surface area of the conical tent =πrl+πr2

=227×14×50+616

=2816 sq units
