Question

The boiling point of C6H6 , CH3OH, C6H5NH2 and C6H5NO2 are 800C, 650C, 1840C and 2120C respectively. Which among them will show highest vapour pressure at room temperature?

Solution

  • Higher the vapour pressure, more the liquid is volatile and so lesser is its boiling point.
(As boiling point is defined as the temperature at which the vapour pressure of liquid is becomes equal to the outer pressure or atmospheric pressure.
  • Hence more volatile liquid’s vapor pressure would become equal to atmospheric pressure even at lower temperature and hence it is having lower boiling point).
  • Hence, CH3OH will have highest vapor pressure at room temperature.
