Question

The bond angle in PH3 is?

Open in App
Solution

The bond angle in PH3:

  • Phosphine is known as a Drago molecule in which no hybridization takes place.
  • According to Drago's rule, the central atoms belonging to groups 13, 14, 15, 16 or from the 3rd to 7th period do not undergo hybridization.
  • During the formation of PH3, the pure p orbitals take part in bonding, whereas the lone pair orbital is mainly present in the s orbital.
  • Phosphorus generally forms three bond pairs and has one lone pair.
  • As PH3does not undergoes the hybridization, hence its bond angles have the value of 93°, which is greater than the usual tetrahedral bond angle i.e 90°.

Hence, the bond angle in PH3 is 93°.
