The bond order and magnetism can be calculated from MOT(Molecular Orbital Theory).

CN- is a 14 electron system out of which 10 are bonding and 4 are anti-bonding electrons, therefore, the MOT electronic configuration of CN- is written as σ1s2σ*1s2σ2s2σ*2s2π2px2π2py2π2pz2

Step 2:- Calculation of Bond order by using the formula given below:
Bondorder=12Nb-Na

where, Nb = no. of bonding electrons = 10

Na = no. of anti-bonding electrons = 4

Bondorder=1210-4=62=3
