Homo erectus had an average cranial capacity of about 1000 cc significantly larger than that of earlier hominids. In fact, in brain size certain Homo erectus individuals exceeded many modern humans of normal intelligence. H. erectus had a cranial capacity greater than that of Homo habilis. The earliest remains show a cranial capacity of 850 cm, while the latest Javan specimens measure up to 1100 cm, overlapping that of H. sapiens. The frontal bone is less sloped and the dental arcade smaller than the australopithecines.
