Complete occupation of princely states was not implemented after the 1857 revolt. Instead The doctrine of lapse and other means of annexation of princely states was abandoned post 1857. Zamindars and Talukdars were pacified and lands returned to them. Further muslims were held responsible for the war of 1857 and were treated harshly for the first few decades post 1857.
