The burning of magnesium strip leads to the formation of magnesium oxide.

$2 M g + O_{2} \to 2 M g O$

The magnesium oxide when dissolved in acid (sulphuric acid) gives salt and water.

$M g O + H_{2} S O_{4} \to M g S O_{4} + H_{2} O$
