Question

The carbon reduction method is mainly applicable for the extraction of how many of the following metals?
Sn,Al,Cr,Mn,Pb,Ca,Na,Zn

Open in App
Solution

For Carbon reduction method the metal should be moderately reactive. Highly reactive or lesser reactive metals can't be extracted by this method.
So Sn, Zn and Pb being moderately reactive, these are extracted by carbon reduction method.
SnO2+CΔSnCO2
ZnO+CZn+CO
2PbO+C2Pb+CO2

For Mn and Cr, alumino-thermic process is used for extraction.

Oxides of strong electropositive metals such as K,Ca,Na and Al are very stable. It is difficult to reduce them into their metallic state by carbon reduction. Such metals are extracted by passing electricity through their fused chlorides/oxides/hydroxides.
