In the beginning we get to know that the author had saved the cat when it was still a kitten. Thus the kitten feels as if the author was responsible for giving her a good life. The cat never left his side. She would lie on top of all his papers and occasionally swat at his pen for entertainment. When the house was in flames the author thinks about his cat and breaks down feeling helpless that he couldn’t save her. He would watch the cleaners cleaning debris from his damaged house in hopes that his cat was somewhere to be found all the while having flashbacks of her. Every Morning he would disturb her and get out of bed. She would then tag along after him, climb up his robe and crawl into his pocket to sleep. The author missed her terribly.
After the fire the cat had run miles away from the house.
She was found by a woman and brought back to the author. The collar had the author's phone number on it but all the phones had been destroyed. So she worked hard to find the rightful owner of the cat.
