The central hall of a school is 18m long and 12.5 m wide. A carpet is to be laid on the floor leaving a strip 50 cm wide near the walls, uncovered. Find the area of the carpet and also the uncovered portion?

The correct option is A 195.5 m2.
Length of hall SR=(l)=18 m
Breadth of hall RQ=(b)=12.5 m
Area of hall =l×b=18×12.5=225 m2
strip =50cm=0.5m
Now, Length of carpet CD=(180.50.5)=17 m[1 m=100 cm50 cm=0.5 m]
and, Breadth of carpet BC=(12.50.50.5)=11.5 m
Area of carpet =CD×BC=17×11.5=195.5 m2

Now, Area of uncovered region = Area of hall Area of carpet =225195.5=29.5 m2
So, A is the correct option.
