Question

The clay soil holds more water than sandy soil. Why ?

Open in App
Solution

Clay and sand have different particle sizes but most importantly it is their behaviour i.e. clay has cohesive forces between them where as sand does not have those cohesive forces due to which voids are left in huge sizes in sand compared to clay although the void ratio are more in clay but they are small in size and not interconnected and so it does prevent water from flowing through it even when it is capable of holding large amounts of water. Sand on the other hand has more void size which are interconnected but overall less void and so water even if present in sand permeates through those interconnected voids.
