Solution

The correct option is C (2,0)
Given: P(1,3),Q(0,0) and R(x,y) are the vertices of an equilateral ΔPQR
To find: R(x,y)=?
We have PQ=QR=RP
Since ΔPQR is equilateral, we shall use the distance formula
d=(x1x2)2+(y1y2)2
So PQ=(10)2+(30)2=4
So the triangle has sides =2
QR=(x0)2+(y0)2=x2+y2 and
RP=(x1)2+(y3)2=x2+y22x23y+4
x2+y2=4
x2+y2=4 ....... (i) and
x2+y22x23y+4=x2+y2
x2+y22x23y+4=x2+y2
x=23y ...... (ii)
Substituting x=23y in (i), we get
(23y)2+y2=4
y(y3)=0
y=(0,3). Substitutingy=0in(i),
x2=4x=±2
So R(x,y)=(2,0),(2,0)
If R(x,y)=(2,0), then
RP=(21)2+(0+3)2
=122
So we reject this value.
Again substituting y=3 in (i), we get
x2+3=0x=3R
So we reject this value.
R(x,y)=(2,0)
