Solution

Chlorine is more reactive than bromine and iodine. Thus, it displaces bromine from potassium bromide and iodine from potassium iodide. The presence of free bromine ions in the solution makes it appear red, and the presence of free iodine ions in the solution makes it appear deep brown.
